PSI’s Process Overview
Design and Print the Pattern
PSI (Printed Sheet In Molding) is a cutting-edge process that integrates printed film with plastic injection to produce parts characterized by high durability and intricate surface patterns.
The process begins with designing the desired pattern or graphics on the film sheet using high-quality printing techniques such as screen printing or digital printing. This ensures that the designs are precise and clear.
Injection Molding
Once the film is properly positioned, molten plastic is injected into the mold. The pressure and heat from this process cause the film to bond securely with the injected plastic.
Cutting and Shaping the Film
The printed film is cut to the appropriate size and shaped to fit the mold according to the part’s specifications. Heat or pressure is applied to help the film conform to the mold's contours.
Quality Inspection
The finished parts undergo rigorous quality inspection, focusing on the clarity of the pattern, the strength of the part, and the adhesion of the film to the plastic surface, ensuring that the product meets high-quality standards.
By adhering to these steps, PSI delivers durable components with detailed surface patterns, making it suitable for a wide range of applications.
Placing the Film in the Mold
(Insert Molding)
The shaped film is carefully positioned within the plastic mold, ensuring accurate placement before the plastic injection process begins.

Printed Sheet In Molding and Related Techniques
Printed Sheet In Molding (PSI), In Mold Decoration (IMD), In Mold Labeling (IML), and Film Insert Molding (FIM) are techniques that incorporate printed film or labels into the injection molding process. While these methods share similarities, they differ in their production techniques and terminology.
Although all four processes utilize printed film and plastic injection, PSI distinguishes itself by producing parts with superior printing detail and durability, making it ideal for applications that demand exceptional sharpness and precision.
-
Printed Sheet In Molding (PSI) emphasizes precision and high detail in part production. It utilizes printed film specifically designed for plastic injection molds, tailored for this process. The result is durable parts featuring sharp decorations. PSI is particularly well-suited for creating three-dimensional components that require strength and complex designs, such as automotive parts and high-quality electrical appliances.
-
In Mold Decoration (IMD) is used to apply decorative patterns on the surface of plastic parts, like control panels or electronic devices. In this method, the printed film is embedded into the plastic surface during the injection process, ensuring that the pattern is permanently integrated.
-
In Mold Labeling (IML) is ideal for plastic packaging, where the label film is placed in the mold prior to injecting plastic. This technique ensures that the label adheres securely from the manufacturing stage, significantly reducing the risk of peeling or damage over time.
-
Film Insert Molding (FIM) is designed for creating three-dimensional parts. In this process, the printed film is shaped to fit the mold, allowing for the production of complex shapes and flexible designs, such as automotive components or products that require curvature.
